Nestled in the Hertfordshire countryside, Harpenden Golf Club is a beautifully maintained, parkland course known for its rich history, welcoming atmosphere, and challenging design. Established in 1894, the club offers a stunning 18-hole layout that combines traditional charm with modern course standards. With a strong commitment to sustainability, course improvement, and member experience, Harpenden continues to be one of the region’s most respected and forward-thinking golf clubs.
Over late spring and early summer of 2025 we led the construction of a sustainable water management project, designed to secure the club’s future irrigation supply while enhancing the overall golf course design and player experience.
To meet the club’s growing irrigation needs, we constructed two interlinked reservoirs with a total capacity of 7,500m³. Carefully integrated within an existing hollow and extending alongside the 18th fairway, the reservoirs provide a reliable and environmentally responsible water source for years to come.
Beyond serving as a vital irrigation resource, the reservoirs have been designed to enhance the landscape and playing strategy. Positioned beside the final hole, they now form a stunning water feature that adds visual appeal and a new strategic challenge for golfers approaching the green.
Both reservoirs were lined to ensure durability and efficient water retention. A chestnut fence was installed around the upper reservoir to complement the natural setting and maintain course safety. Additional fairway drainage systems were also installed to improve turf performance and resilience. All construction and working areas were fully reinstated and seeded, restoring the course to championship condition.
This project delivers a long-term, eco-friendly irrigation solution that supports Harpenden Golf Club’s commitment to sustainable golf course management. The result is a perfect balance between practical engineering, environmental stewardship, and course design innovation, ensuring both the club and its members benefit for generations to come.
